Birthday celebration with Dad

Dad Birthday CelebrationDad and mom travelled to Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan last week so we had a belated birthday celebration for Dad tonight. Sister and I picked our favourite restaurant in Salitun, Wanchai - Jack’s Terrazza Ristorante for its nice Italian food and service. This time we couldn’t make a birthday cake on our own, but I guess every one enjoyed the evening very much. Just one note, if you don’t like second-hand smoke, make sure you get a table inside.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Hong Kong

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Thanks to the David’s recommendation, I made a visit to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Causeway Bay today with my mom and sister to try out their doughnuts. It was well worth the trip, the doughnuts were really yummy. My sister particularly enjoyed eating them as it reminds her of the days studying in Scotland. Doughnuts are definitely evil food, if you are on a diet or health conscious they’re not for you. After all, anything toothsome is unhealthy.

The storeThe boxKrispy Kreme is going to open their second store in SOHO, Central, that means I could literally go there every day! If you haven’t tried one, you should. If you’re lucky to get into their store when a new batch of doughnuts come out, you can try a doughnut for free! For people from UK or US, I figure doughnuts to them are like egg tarts to Hongkongers, a snack that goes perfectly with a tea/coffee and heals homesickness when you’re away.

Today is my dad’s birthday, happy birthday dad!!!

Fans alert: Be first in line to win FREE doughnuts for one year at the opening of their SOHO store on Sept 28th at 7 am!

My first car crash and New hair cut

New hair cutWhat a day! After my first “car accident” this morning, my good friend and mentor Eddie comforted me, “Don’t be upset, every driver would have his/her first time, you’re no exception.” he said. True, there would always be the “first time”, fortunately it was by no means a serious one, nobody was hurt. I was driving along the inner Gloucester Road in Wanchai this morning, and had a minor crash with a big coach right outside the Dah Sing Financial Centre. It happened when I was cutting into the slow lane very slowly after I saw a taxi left, and the coach behind the taxi suddenly moved forward when I was half way through. See the damage of my car.

The coach driver insisted he did nothing wrong, and I felt I didn’t do anything wrong either. So we called the Police and got the case details filed. The next step would be for me to go to the Police Station and file the case if I want to make a claim, if the court rules in favour of me, the other party’s insurer would pay for my damages. After speaking to a few friends, however, my chance of success seems not very high. So I am still undecided at this moment.

To cheer up myself a bit, I went for a hair cut afterwards. Do I feel better now? Probably.

New MacBook and my first date with FON

Before my brother receives my G4 PowerBook, I already got a replacement for myself on Sunday, I just couldn’t stand being without a Mac at home or at presentation and having to go back to office every time I like to do some work. I bought the White MacBook featuring 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo processor and SuperDrive. Since it only came with 512MB RAM (unbearable for running OS X smoothly), I also got a memory upgrade.

Despite Apple’s claims that memory upgrade must be in matched pairs to achieve maximum performance, I only plugged in one piece of 1GHz, making it 1.25GHz in total, since I don’t think that extra “performance boost” would be that noticeable and worth the extra HK$1,100 unless and until one day I start using it for heavy duty work like video editing (not really? show me the benchmarks). Well, if I were doing those things it’s just stupid to do it on a MacBook anyway.

So what’s next? Being notorious for creating all those dirts and scratches on all my previous Macs, it’s probably worthwhile to get a protection sleeve for my new babe. So today I took it to lunch at Delicious, a small cafe on 76 Wellington Street, before the shopping started.

FON in Hong Kong

As I turned the MacBook on trying to search for a Wi-Fi network, I found that there were nearly 30 access points nearby! Haven’t seen such a long list before … My airport was connected to the network FON_delicious right away and the FON website was loaded up. Yeah!

For those who haven’t heard about FON - FON is the largest WiFi community in the world. Members can share their wireless Internet access at home and, in return, enjoy free WiFi wherever they find another Fonero’s Access Point. What a brilliant idea!

Linus, Alien, Bill

Aren’t these avatars cute? I figure I should become a LINUS very soon. If you’re from Hong Kong too, check out FON’s Hong Kong Blog. Back to my MacBook, too bad the 13″ sleeve is out of stock every where in Central, so I only got the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter (HK$150) and hoping that I could find a decent, affordable sleeve when I visit Windsor House in Causeway Bay tonight.

Happy Birthday to Ricky

Birthday Cake for Ricky

My sister and I went to CitySuper yesterday and created this home-made Tiramisu birthday cake for my tennis coach Ricky.

Catching up with old buddies

Dinner with Marcella, Katherine and Bill in Causeway Bay

Tonight I met up with some old buddies, Marcella and Katherine, from “Synerview” (the now defuncted IT company I shared an office with for two years earlier). They are all doing well, Katherine just graduated from RMIT and is looking for jobs in HK and Australia; while Marcella is working in the marketing department of a major hardware vendor and enjoying it too. All the best for these young ladies.

I have a thing for …

Every one should have some persistent and illogical desires. What are yours?

Epic triumph by Agassi at the US Open 2006

Agassi beat BaghdatisMy sister’s decision of buying a Windows PC laptop last month was right. I couldn’t have watched Andre Agassi’s epic five-setter win over the eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis at the US Open 2006 on i-Cable.com without it!

Since Cable TV Hong Kong is the “one and only” company I hate (yes, I take it personally with them), I swear that I would not subscribe to its cable tv or internet services ever again.

Steffi Graf cheers for AgassiBeing a crazy tennis and football fan, you could imagine how tough it is for me, especially during the World Cup. Some guys up there in the Cable TV management must have realized that there are probably thousands of outraged ex-customers like me, so they have decided to broadcast some of the sporting events online. This US Open cost me only HK$40, not a bad deal, but that website ONLY works on IE/Windows!!! $#@%^&*

Anyway, I’m happy enough to be able to see my idol Agassi playing his last tournament before retirement and my all-time favourite Graf cheering for her husband in the stand. This match would be remembered by all tennis fans for many many years to come, what a classic!
