First of all, wish all of you a very happy Chinese New Year. I have already made my new year’s resolution in January, so what about Chinese New Year?
Traditionally, I spent most of the time visiting relatives, eating and playing (movies, poker, mahjong ..) just like most other Hong Kong people during the holiday. This kind of activities are not evil by themselves, in fact this holiday was one of the things that I really looked forward to as a kid. Nothing could beat the red pocket money, really.
When I get older, the amount of red pocket money has gradually become insignificant and all these activities no longer excite me. In fact, I found them mostly useless and time-wasting. I’m glad that my parents have relaxed quite a lot on various “obligations” as I grow up, and I am given absolute freedom to decide how to spend the holiday. I recall that I hide away to work with an Internet startup during the whole CNY in the dot-com year of 2000, which brought nothing to me personally unless you think a lousy interview by EasyFinder is something that I’d be proud of.
Holiday time is precious. I would always want to see myself making the best use of it, say doing some work or errands, or catching up with friends that I haven’t got time to talk to. I don’t know, this holiday I am still procrastinating. I am not sure if this is good or bad procrastination, I just hate myself for that.
There are things that I really like to do, you know, the fun stuffs, but I know they’re not as important as other things, i.e. the boring / unpleasant stuffs. What’s worse, the boring stuffs usually take longer time to complete. So, I’ve been constantly struggling between the tasks without even starting on any of them! Usually the struggle ends with me staring at the computer monitor for hours and then heading for bed. It sucks.
Tomorrow is the last day of the holiday, I swear that I’d at least get ONE of the boring tasks done:
* Validate 2,500 email addresses and send out 3 mailers (due 3 days ago)
* Make some unwanted design changes to a delivered design (due 14 days ago)
* Write 3 new job ads, with no aid from previous templates (due 7 days ago)
* Draft a quote and relevant portfolio for a prospective project (due 4 days ago)
If I manage to complete all 4 tasks, I’d like to reward myself for working on one fun task below:
* Re-design Bill’s Mac app site
* Setting up a Wiki for BeansBox
UPDATE: As at 4:25 am, I finally finished all four boring tasks. But there is no more time/energy left for doing anything fun. Sigh …
