BarCamp Hong Kong 2010

BarCamp Hong Kong (#barcamphk), probably the biggest unconference in town, took place at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University last Saturday September 18th. The event took me and my team at BeansBox quite an effort to put together in such a short time, while doing loads of client work simultaneously, so it's definitely a warm feeling to see so many people came and said they enjoyed it.

This is the fourth BarCamp in Hong Kong, and the third I've helped organize. Unlike the last two years, we have a new and much bigger venue so there are a lot more things to take care of. My fellow organizer Ben did a fabulous job of securing the venue and arranging all the logistics, while Napoleon and Henry helped get many sponsors on board with their reputation and connections in the industry. When you have a rockstar team like these guys, you could make things happen with just a few people.

If you have ever run an event before, you would know that there are so many things that can go wrong. Consider that we only secured the venue in the first week of August and started all the preparation and marketing activities after that, it's an amazing result. The quality of the crowd is exceptionally high; we wouldn't be able to setup the new rooms for kick-off and registration at all if not for many of the participants to step up to help. Despite the large number of participants (around 600~700, I have yet to count properly), the daunting heat, and the ad-hoc nature of the event, every one was understanding, helpful and cheerful.

I only got a chance to attend 3 or 4 sessions, and I enjoyed all of them. I hope more of those will be made available online later. My favorite moments of the day:

  • The vibe at the kick-off when every one introduced themselves with 3 words.
  • Giving out free lunch coupons at canteen and seeing people's reaction "Oh really, this is free?".
  • Two guys with same votes for second most popular session "fighting" for the Kindle at closing.

What are your favorite moments?
